EDMONTON OILERS UPDATE: MISSED OPPORTUNITY

We wrote a piece yesterday about the possibility of the Oilers bringing James Wisniewski to camp on a PTO. Looks like Edmonton has missed the opportunity.

A player on a PTO can sign an SPC (Standard Player Contract) with any other team, but I can't see Edmonton going that route. It's just too risk to give a guarantee to a player who may be finished.

Options are becoming limited for the Oilers with only six weeks to training camp. Names like Dan Boyle may be available on the UFA market, but the Oilers may circle back to a player like Eric Gryba.

Tampa Bay might have hit a homerun here, but only time will tell. There's some real risk this player isn't going to make a comeback and his injuries will have slowed his game to the point where he can't keep up in the NHL. Then again, he could be a homerun and last year there were some PTO's who made provided some tremendous results for teams who took a chance.

  1. Can't figure out why PC is waiting if he doesn't have something up his sleeve.I still wonder about Rasmus Ristolainen but no one is talking about him.

    1. I'm going to do up a little piece here in the next few days about Ristolainen to see if he make make sense for Edmonton. But I agree, I hope Chiarlelli has some sort of plan to fill that hole. Even if it's internally.

    2. I love the Oiler lefty defensemen but I'm concerned we are hoarding them now. My reading of the expansion draft rules is that the Oilers would have to protect Sekera(must be protected), Klefbom, Nurse, Reinhart and Davidson as well as Larsson, Even with the 8 skaters scenario if you add to that list without a subtraction, you just loose the player anyway next summer. If trade takes one of the Oilers good young lefty defensemen plus a player such as Pouliot, at least they will be able to protect what they have instead of letting Las Vegas plunder them. Also hold on to the 2017 first round and anything else expansion draft protected. It will be gold in 10 months time.

    3. The Oilers would protect Klefbom and Larsson. Sekera is a must because of his no move clause. Davidson is a 50/50 and I would protect him but Nurse is still not eligible to be drafted so there is no concern there. If they signed another big name though, they might face a tough decision.

    4. To me that makes someone like Brandon Montour who is not expansion draft eligible a more attractive target for Edmonton as an offensive defenseman.

    5. For sure he'd be a great get for Edmonton and a future power play quarterback, but I don't see Anaheim eager to move him do you? Even if they did, I'm not sure he's a fit this year in the NHL. Still needs time to develop.
